Why not just donate money?
The problem we're trying to solve is social, and we want to create opportunities for people to converse, listen, learn, and become informed. Ideally, everyone leaves a little more educated on topics of diversity in the outdoors and can create an actionable difference beyond their wallet.
Why are you asking for so much money?
We are building this exhibit from the ground up, which means we're responsible for the cost of an event space, vendors, contributor payments, installation fees, and marketing. Historically excluded groups are underpaid, and we want to ensure we provide every person with the pay they deserve.
What will the exhibit include?
The exhibit will include a range of artwork, photography, documentaries, and interactive installations from different outdoor organizations, activists, artists, and creators. We will also have a shop featuring products and apparel from contributors all over the country. Our goal is to have an annual exhibition with rotating work.
We will also have a resource hub that provides connections to real-time projects and partnerships.
You include a lot of groups. How can you speak for them?
It's simple; I won't. Our space is a collaborative initiative highlighting stories from many different walks of life and those who consent to share. It's a chance to learn how groups make sense of the world in relation to their background. Stories will teach us about values, history, significant events, cultural beliefs, and more.
This is cool, but it's why Austin?
As the curator, Austin is my home base. With so much gentrification in metropolitan areas, I hope to preserve cultural ties and challenge conversations related to race in many of these areas. We've also created a program to increase participation among low-income families who can't pay to visit our exhibition so they can learn and enjoy the experience as well!
I can't make it to Austin. Is there a way for me to view the event?
I understand that travel can be a barrier for many. We will include a virtual tour of the exhibit on our website so you can have the opportunity to view the exhibition at your leisure.
We will also share detailed information regarding the installation process on our Instagram, so be sure to follow us @tawathreads.
We are starting in Austin but plan to expand to other cities. If you aren't located in Austin, fingers crossed we'll make it to your city next.
What do people of the global Majority mean?
Global Majority is a collective term that first and foremost speaks to and encourages those so-called to think of themselves as belonging to the global Majority. It refers to people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and or have been radicalized as 'ethnic minorities.'
