Project Description

At Harper Phoenix Interfaith, our mission is crystal clear: to empower underserved communities and confront the pervasive crisis of food insecurity. In inner-city neighborhoods like South Jamaica Queens, where we live and work, access to fresh, nutritious food isn't merely a challenge; it's a dire crisis exacerbated by a dearth of healthy options. Families struggle daily, grappling with limited choices, leading to heightened rates of chronic diseases, and impacting the well-being of countless individuals.

Addressing the Crisis: Our CSA Initiative
In response to this pressing issue, we are proud to launch a vital initiative: sponsoring a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. CSAs are more than just a solution; they represent a partnership between local farmers and community members. Participants purchase shares directly from local farms and receive a portion of the harvest throughout the season, providing access to fresh, organic produce and promoting sustainable farming practices.

The Immense Opportunity for Impact
The opportunity to effect meaningful change is immense. Across the country, hundreds of families face food insecurity, with marginalized communities bearing the brunt of the burden. Located in South Jamaica Queens, one of the most underserved sections of New York City, our efforts will extend to hundreds of families in the Tri-State area and Long Island. By addressing this crisis, we have the chance to create lasting change and improve countless lives.

Long Reaching Impact

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in support of Sustainable Food Access. This initiative aims to address food insecurity and promote healthier living in underserved areas, particularly in Queens and Nassau County New York

Participating in a CSA program not only offers fresh and organic produce but is also more cost-effective than traditional grocery shopping. Studies have shown that incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into daily diets can significantly improve health outcomes, combating issues such as obesity and disease prevalent in impoverished neighborhoods.

To ensure the successful distribution of the Harper Phoenix CSA throughout the community, we will implement a multi-faceted approach that prioritizes accessibility, education, and community engagement. Here's how we plan to execute this initiative:

1. Distribution Strategy: The Harper Phoenix CSA program will establish multiple pick-up locations strategically located throughout Queens and Nassau County, New York, to ensure convenient access for residents. These locations will include community centers, churches, schools, and other centralized venues easily accessible to the target demographic.

2. Impact Assessment: We anticipate positively impacting a diverse range of community members, including elders, children, and families. Through our CSA program, we aim to provide nutritious food options to at least 100 families per month, equating to approximately 300 individuals, including children and elderly members.

3. Education and Awareness: In addition to providing fresh produce, we recognize the importance of educating community members on the significance of healthy eating habits. We will conduct workshops, cooking demonstrations, and nutrition seminars to raise awareness about the benefits of incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into daily diets. These educational sessions will empower individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed dietary choices and improve overall health outcomes.

4. Community Mobilization: Engaging community members in the initiative is crucial to its success. We will mobilize volunteers from within the community to assist with various aspects of the program, including distribution, education, and outreach efforts. By actively involving residents in the implementation process, we aim to foster a sense of ownership and collective responsibility for promoting healthier living within the community.

Through these comprehensive strategies, the Harper Phoenix CSA program will not only provide access to fresh and nutritious food but also empower individuals to make healthier choices, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being and resilience of underserved communities in Queens and Nassau County, New York.
