Project Description

The rapidly growing emphasis on mental health care and therapy within Black, Hispanic, and Christian communities presents a singular challenge: a significant gap in foundational knowledge and understanding about mental health itself. These communities encounter numerous obstacles in establishing effective mental health care, hindered by cultural norms, financial constraints, and religious beliefs. At Flamingo Trauma Recovery, our aim is to connect these communities with resources through culturally relevant education and financial support, tailoring our approach to meet their unique needs.

Our initiatives are especially focused on aiding Black and Hispanic women, helping them to comprehend their mental health needs through access to culturally sensitive groups, psycho-educational materials, trauma-informed spiritual guidance, and therapy referrals and sponsorships. This approach enables individuals to embark on their mental health journey at their own pace, armed with the knowledge and empowerment necessary for making informed decisions about their care.

While numerous organizations offer financial assistance for therapy, few address the cultural and religious barriers that specifically impact Black and Hispanic women, such as religious trauma and the unique cultural challenges they face. Flamingo Trauma Recovery stands out by providing therapy access enhanced by education and resources, ensuring members are informed and ready to select mental health clinicians who best meet their needs.

Our funding goals include providing members with self-care kits from Black-owned and women-owned businesses, sponsoring therapy for those who participate in therapist-led sessions, and expanding our team by hiring 1-3 employees, preferably recent Black college graduates with a passion for mental health care.

Our dedicated team, including board members and our multitasking founder, is eager to grow this year, enhancing our ability to support women of color and faith-based communities in overcoming mental health stigma and barriers.

Your support plays a crucial role in this endeavor, making you an integral part of advancing mental health advocacy and dismantling the stigma associated with it. We are deeply grateful for your commitment to this cause, which fosters a safer space for mental health and faith to coexist, empowering women of color and faith communities to seek the help they deserve. Thank you for standing with us in this vital work.

The Campaign FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Do you accept insurance? We are a nonprofit organization that provides mental health education and resources to increase therapy access, but we do not currently have therapists in-house for hire. We provide therapy sponsoring for eligible members by paying or up to six sessions and providing an annual therapy vouchers for members who are pursuing a long term therapy regimen
  • Are you a faith-based organization? We are a faith-based organization with a trauma-informed approach to daily interaction with members and spiritual intervention. Our goal is to be both safe and sound, offering spaces for emotional and spiritual safety as well as spaces for Bible-based discussions, deconstruction and faith construction. We serve with awareness and regard for individuals who may have been harmed by religious trauma or need support with theological doctrine in order to make progress in their mental health journey
  • How do you currently fund the organization's activities? The organization is currently funded by tiered premium memberships where members are able to meet therapists, receive daily self-care kits, and more.
