Project Description

Our small business The Plot Market Garden is combatting food insecurity on Vancouver Island by providing our healthy, fresh produce to locals. We sell our spray-free/sustainably grown vegetables through various market streams including direct to consumer through a community supported agriculture (CSA) program, at grocery stores, and in restaurants.

We are making a positive contribution towards solving problems that large industrial scale agriculture poses. Farming practices that conventional agriculture implements are wreaking havoc on the environment and creating health issues in several ways. These include inefficient use of arable land, using chemical and synthetic fertilizers, tilling soil which disturbs the soil food web and microbiology, and depleting biodiversity with insecticides, pesticides, and fungicides. According to the UN, large farms account for only 1% of the world’s farms yet occupy 65% of agricultural land.

Our small-scale farm is helping solve this issue by growing bio-intensively, producing more vegetables on a smaller amount of land, and increasing biodiversity and soil health through best organic practices like using compost and rotating crops. With our growing global population, it’s necessary that people are being fed with nutrient-dense vegetables that are grown in a sustainable way to ensure a successful food system for the long term.

We are uniquely qualified to pull this off because we are young and passionate farmers, which is needed for the future of a sustainable agricultural system. Given the growing demand for food, young farmers are needed to replace the aging population within the agriculture sector, and our regenerative practices are needed.

We are raising money to both further our growing season and adapt to climate change with two more greenhouses. In doing so, we will also be employing our female team in order to build them.
