What is New Nurse University striving to do?
Our mission is to streamline pre-licensure program remediation processes with innovative strategies to include better study techniques for standardized testing. Long term, we want to help improve academic performance and help increase nursing program retention rates and maintain state board, NCLEX® pass rates.
The vision is to help bridge the gaps in nursing education by providing recommendations, educational training, and quality improvement planning to underserved pre-licensure nursing programs & graduate alumni left behind.
What is New Nurse University?
New Nurse University is a tutoring company that helps undergraduate nursing students improve academic performance by providing individualized study techniques throughout their programs. We are a black-owned program where our professional tutors provide a "Study Success Blueprint" with individualized study plans that include effective study routines and active learning techniques that facilitate growing the student's clinical decision-making skills. Students have shared that going through our program has transformed their critical thinking by helping them talk and discuss what they are studying whether it’s working with our tutors online or in person.
Who is your ideal client?
Our ideal client is the underrepresented first-generation college student. We serve the students by providing more mentorship opportunities while bringing clinical practice to the classroom through hands-on engagement and the use of advanced technology. Our current students working with Nurse Renee and have increased their understanding of safe clinical practice and their nursing role involving patient expectations while improving exam scores. We are growing, and raising money to expand to a brick-and-mortar space in the Chicago south suburbs community to become the first black own independent tutoring company with a sim center.
The funds received will be used to renovate a retail space where nursing students can get tutoring, study, and practice nursing skills. We are hoping to provide rooms where we can simulate evidence-based low-fidelity scenarios, a conference room for small events and debriefing activities, an office, a reception area, and maybe a break room. New Nurse University tutoring center has been the plan from the beginning, and we are so blessed to have the support of Ifundwomen of color and Caress to help us make it come true.
What problem are you trying to solve?
The majority of students are now entering nursing programs as first-generation college majors. Once in a program, many students lack the study skills, application, and decision-making techniques needed to go through a nursing program without failing. The gap between effective studying leads to declining program retention rates and poor exam scores throughout the program.
Because every student learns differently, some nursing programs cannot support students with remediation plans that include and address outside factors affecting testing. Some learning gaps ultimately lead to students passing nursing school but failing the state boards on their first attempt. We need our students to pass the first time to help close the growing nursing shortage.
