Melanation is a black-owned media company focused on documenting, broadcasting, and amplifying digital experiences for women of color.

What is Melanation and how did it come about? 

Melanation is starting digital media company for women of color. "Mela" comes from the word melanin --which represents our identity and culture. "Nation" represents unity and connection. It is a digital experience and social platform created by black women for black women who believe in the power of storytelling and educating personal and professional advice as a pipeline for empowerment and unity. Melanation's goal is to become one of the leading media outlets for all young women of color to embrace and be prioritized for their identity and uniqueness. 

Since 2017, I found the need for more visibility of black women in the digital and social media space. We are constantly typecast as a one-dimensional demographic and it's really frustrating because black women come from all different backgrounds. It's frustrating that are so many black women being overlooked and undervalued for career and business opportunities simply because we are not understood and/or don't fit in. There is so much beauty and origination from black women and I just wanted to create an online space showing our successes and accomplishments. 

Melanation is all about community! And it’s the perfect venue for revealing something amazing about ourselves and allow each and every one of our voices to be heard, regardless of background, socioeconomic status, experience, struggles, and accomplishments.

Melanation is designed for service, and we want to cater to the needs of all black women, inclusive of the non-binary and transgender community. Our funding efforts are focused on expanding our reach and broadening our capabilities.

How does Melanation stand out against other media brands or platforms?

The problem is that there are many issues for women of color who necessarily don't feel like they don't have their voice, experience, creativity, hardship, and successes that is normally not recognized nor celebrated in the media. Women of color experience the world in a particular way which enables us to bring ideas and topics that other people don't have the knowledge, background, or personal experience. We bring a certain cultural value that is needed today. Melanation wants to change people's perception of us be we have to do on a larger media scale. 

Our content is all about transparency and authenticity that generates inspiration in all areas of our lives (career, beauty+fashion, mental health and wellness, finance, social+political awareness, entrepreneurship) created in the lens of a black woman. Create a space and community for black women to reclaim their power and presence in media outlets while also supporting one another. 

What are Melanation's current funding goals?

1. Expand our current team to enhance our vision as one of the leading minority-owned media company to level with other companies such as Girlboss and XoNecole. That includes but not limited to social media manager, brand partnership & sales manager, junior editor, and other creatives. Also, funding will go to professional services, offices supplies, and supported technology.

2. Cultivate an exclusive online community giving members access to special masterclasses from certified experts in the areas of career, entrepreneurship, and health and wellness. The monthly membership would also allow you to connect with other members, mentoring sessions, useful downloadable resources, and receive exclusive discounts and perks all for $9 a month or $75 annually.
