EXCITING UPDATE!!! We are thrilled to announce our incredible friends at the Women's Foundation of Minnesota are joining us as partners for Mama's Day Bail Out, providing a dollar-for-dollar match up to $10,000! Share this campaign far and wide, donate, and together let's DOUBLE the impact for women in our community.

Every day thousands of mothers across the country find themselves trapped in jail and separated from their families simply because they can’t afford to pay bail. Women sit in jail needlessly for days, and at times weeks, for non-violent crimes. The Coven is partnering with NAACP MinneapolisBlack Visions CollectiveNational Bail Out, and the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota to raise money so local mothers can be released from jail in time for Mother’s Day (May 13). Organizations across the country are participating in this movement, making it possible for mothers everywhere to spend their day with the families they love.

In addition to fundraising,  we’re raising awareness about the impact inhumane and destructive bail practices have on our communities. According to the National Bail Out project, “Over $9 billion is wasted to incarcerate people who have been convicted of no crime.” Even a short time in jail can have a catastrophic impact, ruining lives through the loss of jobs, housing, and even children. You can help  get mamas out of jail and home for Mother’s Day.

Three ways to support:

1. Make a tax deductible donation to our bail out fund by donating here. Proceeds will go towards the NAACP Minneapolis’ prison abolition work, Black Visions Collective, and the National Bail Out fund. Collectively, our goal is to bail out women from our local jail system and provide support services in time for Mother’s Day.

2. Attend the Mama’s Bail Out Panel on Tuesday, May 8 at The Coven. The event is an opportunity to learn about how our criminal justice system became so broken, the incredible women working to fix it from the inside out, and how you can support with your vote and your voice. Tickets are tax deductible and proceeds will go to the NAACP Minneapolis, Black Visions Collective, and National Bail Out working in collaboration with one another.

3. Join us for a Mother’s Day celebration on Saturday, May 12 at The Coven. Every ticket purchased will go towards our bail out fund. In addition to providing R&R for attendees, we invite you to bring much-needed supplies for women coming out of jail. The NAACP Minneapolis will help us distribute these to women who need it. Tickets are tax deductible and proceeds will go to the NAACP Minneapolis, Black Visions Collective, and National Bail Out working in collaboration with one another.

Supplies needed - accepted at The Coven (30 N 1st Street, Minneapolis) from April 30- May 12.

The Campaign FAQs

Why are we bailing moms out this Mother's Day?

Everyday tens of thousands of people languish in jail simply because they cannot afford bail. In addition to the over $9 billion wasted to incarcerate people who have been convicted of no crime, pre-trial incarceration has catastrophic impacts on families and communities. Even a few days in jail can ruin a person’s life. They may lose their job, their family may lose housing and some even lose their children.

Pre-trial incarceration has catastrophic impacts on communities of color in particular. Black people are over two times more likely to be arrested and once arrested are twice as likely to be caged before trial. Our LBGTQ and gender nonconforming family are targeted and caged at even more alarming rates, and once in jail are significantly more likely to be sexually and physically abused. For instance, one in five transgender women have spent time in prison or jail and one in three of them reported being sexually assaulted while there.
