Project Description

Did you know that veterinary medicine is a FEMALE dominated industry?  According to the US Bureau of Statistics 2023 Census, 70% of all practicing veterinarians are women.  Veterinary nurses and other support staff are even more highly skewed toward female.

My son, Will, and I on my very first Mother's Day.  I was working a 12 hour ER shift so my family brought him by to visit.

I’ve been in this wonderful industry for over 20 years and held almost every position available.  What I have watched is an industry in mental and emotional decline.  The veterinary suicide rate is higher than any other industry, burnout runs rampant and turnover cripples many facilities. So what gives?

It’s a ball of wax, people.. a BIG one.  Just take a minute for a google search on the subject and you will find countless articles referencing an industry in crisis.

This is an over 35 billion dollar industry that remains unrealized due to operational struggles, high turnover and overwhelming demand.

It has led to soaring prices, lack of available appointments and bad interactions for the pet parent, as well. Nobody is winning here.

But I refuse to take a defeatist’s position.  This IS a fixable problem, just not one that is going to be solved by better pricing strategy and cutting costs.  Veterinarians and their staff need some support!

I have seen these women do the most incredible things.  We all have brought our sick children to work with us so we didn’t have to cancel a day of appointments for our beloved patients.  We all have pushed through some of the most difficult circumstances, with our families along for the ride.  We worked really hard for these degrees, we love our work.  We just don’t want to have to choose so starkly between work and the other parts of our lives!

Will and my youngest, Lily, with two of my wonderful former colleagues.

So how do we start to fix this?  By putting the focus back on the veterinary worker.

In 2025, we will be opening the first LOVEvets animal hospital in St. Augustine, Florida.  To ensure our clinical employees thrive, we will be offering free childcare through Kindercare and weekly mental health services to all clinical employees (starting on day one).

We also will improve experiences for pet owners with more flexible scheduling options, access to pet insurance, telemedicine capabilities and, overall, just a better sense of community with your family’s veterinarian.

Spending some time cuddling with one of my patients before the exam begins!

This is a human problem, the humans that take care of our beloved pets. We are currently seeking funding to help support operational expenses through the first year.  I have assembled a crack team of women representing decades of experience within veterinary medicine.

If you have ever loved an animal with your whole heart and soul, please consider helping us reshape the landscape of support within this industry.  Help us put some LOVE back into the veterinary community! Thank you for your donation!
