Project Description

Looking for a person or persons who would like to become part of our crazy country store family by being patrons and donors. We are a nonprofit, so any funding will be tax deductible. We are small, but an essential and a vital part of our high desert community.

We have never had a big donor before since we just started managing the store in 2020. You could be the first and we will hang your picture on our wall, celebrate your birthday, thank you on social media, and send you a gift basket of local goodies.

If your concerns  are for food security in low income areas, addressing the needs of food deserts, building food hubs, and if you have a romance for the places where everybody really does know your name and there is an eclectic but true community, we are a match for you.

About Us: We are a local food hub, grocery, feed, pet food, and hay store in a wildly beautiful, remote area in the high desert of New Mexico. The nearest grocery store is almost 35 miles away from us in the Zuni Pueblo. The nearest hay, feed, and pet food store is 40-50 miles away, in either Gallup or Grants, NM.

Our Neighborhood: We are centered in an isolated cluster of communities near El Morro National Monument that encompasses a very diverse and eclectic population, including members of the Navajo Nation, Zuni Pueblo, a mixed cast of other characters, and a larger than average proportion of LGBTQIA individuals.

Our Personality: Friendly, warm, complex, creative, tenacious, passionate about this place and its people, tolerant with almost everyone, intolerant of bigotry, racism, homophobia, misogyny, and other forms of social oppression.

We don’t have a lot of material things and our finances are stretched to the limit. But we came here to live a simpler life, get back to basics, realign our priorities, and live in greater harmony with the earth and each other. We are not asking for riches, just to hold onto something dear and vital to our community.

We live in a ramshackle barn-red building that was assembled over time in many odd pieces. One part is log cabin, mostly obscured, with various additions and quirks. We are low-slung, earthy, warm, welcoming, and like most country stores, have an affinity with the past, even as we try to stretch into the future with greater security.

About You: We had you at country store! You are a romantic, with a love of history and a fondness for eclectic communities. Most likely, you are a tad offbeat yourself. Perhaps you long for a simpler life, a place where everybody knows your name, where neighbors help when needed and leave you alone when requested.

Maybe you have a secret desire to get away from it all—to reinvent yourself in a place where the silence can be profound enough to change your life. Perhaps you love the dark night skies, the howls of coyotes, the blooming of a desert after monsoon season, the deep renewing snows, and the company of ravens. You might be looking for a way to make a difference in this world, but in a manner that feels more personal and potent than just donating randomly to all the worthy hands outstretched.

No, we are not the most deserving or even the most needy. But we are one of a dying breed of independently owned, small, local, community-focused, enterprises and with us, a small amount of generosity can be the difference between our survival and our demise. And we stand alone here.

So, if you are still reading, we welcome your questions and conversation. (We’ll send a photo if you send one.  But we aren’t about surfaces or glitz here—just substance.) We can’t meet you at the mall, Starbucks, or a bar. We don’t have such things nearby. But you are welcome to come on over, in spirit or in person. We look forward to getting to know you better and building a lasting relationship. Are you the one?

Welcome Home!
