Childcare options have not evolved with the ever-changing family dynamics. For the entrepreneur, no pay as you go option. For parents working outside of the 9-5 Monday-Friday job, no extended/weekend hours. And for the last-minute cancelation, or the move to a new city and knowing no one situation. The mold we’ve created in childcare doesn't fit.
1. There is a racial disparity in Early Childhood Education (ECE). Over 50K+ preschoolers are expelled each year. That's 3x greater than Students in K-12 programs and North Carolina is 6th in the Nation for Early Childhood Expulsion
2. Traditionally ECE programs focus solely on the academic growth of children and often neglect the importance of their social-emotional development which is vital in early years.
3. This neglect is directly correlated with Childhood Obesity which is at an all-time high. Childhood Obesity produces anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and social problems such as bullying. Children often overeat for comfort, or isolate themselves inside with minimal physical activity.
We are the only drop-in childcare center downtown. Our parents are those who are looking for a safe and trusting place to bring their children while running errands, attending meetings, conferences, or appointments.
It's the place parents who are reestablishing themselves in gainful employment, taking an educational course, or attending training can rely on. It also happens to be a great space for children while they're at a Durham Bulls Game or a show and dinner at DPAC.
Kate’s Korner Drop-In Childcare service is a play-with-a-purpose destination that focuses on Equity and Inclusion,, Social Emotional Learning, and Health and Nutrition.
Kate's Korner is Downtown Durham's only drop-in childcare facility and will quickly become the place parents love. We offer cost-efficient, pay as you go, evening and weekend childcare options.
I have 30 dedicated years in Early Childhood Education, starting as a 2yr. old teacher, then as a trainer developing award-winning teams, directing the day to day operations of a center and then providing vision and oversight for several centers on a district level. I understand how to create a home-away-from-home feeling while prioritizing the needs of children. This prioritization is what I like to call the formula. Trained, Prepared, and Nurturing Educators + Tools, Time, and Recognition = Happy Children & Parents. Building organic relationships with both educators and families is my secret sauce for retention and growth.
I am raising money on iFundWomen to help support our efforts in making certain that every child has the opportunity to experience quality care in a safe, fun, and nurturing environment. Funds will be used to provide scholarships for students who otherwise would not be able to attend.
The Jean and Thomas Goodwin Foundation is the non-profit organization that will provide an opportunity for every child to join in the fun! It will support our Durham community that is adjusting and working on stabilizing their households. Rather their job searching, going to an interview, registering for classes or learning a trade, Kate’s Korner will be a safe childcare option that lessens their worry about quality care for their children!
We have some really cool, fun rewards for you to take part in on our campaign page below! T-Shirts, Mugs, Stickers, even free childcare hours at our facility!
