Jarabe: A Modern-Mexican Paleteria

Jarabe, pronounced hah-rah-beh which means "syrup" in Spanish, is a Latina-owned business based in Washington, D.C. that specializes in serving handcrafted Mexican-style ice pops - paletas.

Founded in response to the lack of representation for Latino-products in the ice cream industry, Jarabe Gourmet Pops fills a crucial gap in the industry.

While ice creams in other categories have upwards of 40 grams of sugar per serving, we sit right at the center as an all natural and healthy option for consumers. Unlike ice cream and American popsicles which are made by mixing milk powder and adding artificial coloring and flavoring, paletas are made with real fruit and herbs you can see and taste.

 Our paletas provide a healthier alternative while adding a modern twist to old generational techniques. All our products are handmade using fresh and natural ingredients.

With a modern touch, Jarabe hopes to showcase the best of Mexico and Latin America while recreating some of our best childhood sweets.

Our product is perfect for anyone up for a sweet treat, or even a spicy one. 

We pride ourselves in having a flavor to satisfy every palette, including vegan dairy-free options. 

Jarabe is an inspiration from my childhood upbringing - seeing my father sell paletas in the streets of East Los Angeles - a story of humility that I wish to share with all of you.

Drawing from traditional Latin American flavors our paletas are handmade - with love - using the finest ingredients possible from local farmers and growers.

Paleterias are a familial experience, we hope to bring this same experience to you. We hope to provide a product and a space where people can come together and appreciate our cultura.

Our mission is to preserve the rich flavors of Mexico and Latin America and become the preferred brand for Mexican premium paletas, all while providing an outstanding selection of Mexican frozen dessert products.

At the heart of the company is our passion for social change - we are devoted to addressing public awareness on important policy issues affecting the Latino community, while striving for an inclusive workforce that values the contributions of immigrants and minority communities.

At Jarabe, we believe that we have an obligation to reduce our carbon footprint. We do this by committing ourselves to green business practices that put the environment first. Since inception, we have done our part to nurture a culture of sustainability by incorporating eco-friendly business practices into our everyday operation – whether it’s leveraging technology to reduce raw material waste or establishing a robust recycling program – making responsible environmental choices is a priority. 

Additionally, our sustainable business model starts at the source. We are intentional about our green procurement processes that prioritize doing business with ethical suppliers that pay employees a fair and livable wage.

Furthermore, we are committed to ensuring that all of our products are made in a sustainable fashion while prioritizing family farms, rural communities, and locally-sourced products. Ultimately, our goal is to address the issue of surplus food by establishing food waste partnerships in our supply chains. According to the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC), food waste is responsible for roughly the same amount of greenhouse gas emission as 37 million cars. We believe we have a viable and unique product that can put excess food to good use. In conclusion, at all levels in our business we are committed to maintaining sustainable business practices that puts our future generations first.

With artisanal ice cream expected to have a growth rate of 7.1% by 2026, this gives us an opportunity to define the future of the ice cream industry. 

Jarabe sits at the intersection of a $121 billion global ice cream market with our target consumers (Hispanic/Latine and Black Indigenous people of color) commanding over $2.7 trillion in spending power.

With over 20,000 customers having tried our product, we know the days of (dairy) ice cream are numbered.

Customers are looking for healthy and fresh options - and we check all the boxes.

My name is Diana Rios Jasso and I am the founder and owner of Jarabe Gourmet Pops.

For me, Jarabe is more than paletas, it’s personal.

​It’s about bringing something to the marketplace that not only reflects our culture and heritage, but also our lived experiences as Mexican immigrants.

It’s about using Jarabe as a platform to demystify negative stereotypes about street vendors, and most importantly, it's about breaking my family’s generational cycle of poverty.

However, Latinas like myself still face barriers to entry when it comes to starting a business. Breaking these institutional and financial barriers are the reasons behind this campaign.

So, we are reaching out to you because we need help. We need your help to get our business to the next level.

We are currently raising $35,000 in crowdfunding. These funds will allow us to scale our business and obtain our own manufacturing facility to produce our paletas. The funds will allow us to scout for a location, obtain the architectural design and permits needed. All other expenses related to this project will be supplemented by alternative funding sources.
