Project Description

Lucky Sips, my spirited yet small business, specializes in organizing unforgettable alcohol-free events and crafting exclusive non-alcoholic drink boxes available only on our e-commerce shop for the residents of Oahu. We embrace everyone with open arms, fostering a judgment-free environment for individuals to enjoy their preferred non-alcoholic beverages.

Story Behind Lucky Sips:

Alcohol had been a constant presence in my life since childhood, but especially during my time in the military for the last 7 years, where the stereotype of a "drunken sailor" often rang true. Witnessing the negative impact of excessive drinking on friends, coworkers, and leaders over my seven years of service was eye-opening.

In my personal journey, I had come to rely on alcohol as a companion and coping mechanism during times of separation from loved ones. What started as a source of temporary relief soon turned into a toxic “friendship”, affecting my well-being and relationships. Yet, I, like many young women, didn't fit the classic mold of an alcoholic, which allowed me to make excuses to myself and those around me. I thankfully eventually mustered up the courage to live an alcohol-free life after having a heartfelt conversation with my sister about our silent struggles with alcohol use. After a few months of sobriety, I began to explore the world of non-alcoholic beverages and fell head over heels with the idea of these attractive alternatives. The emerging industry of non-alcoholic beverages is a beautiful phenomenon, one that I am determined to play a role in. The clarity and warmth of sobriety offered a different kind of intoxication, one I felt compelled to share with others.

My dream of opening a non-alcoholic beverage shop/tasting room no longer seemed like a pipe dream; it was an achievable reality. Once I set up my business licenses, I began contacting different non-alcoholic brands and building relationships with those I believed in and thoroughly enjoyed. I then began creating my website of which I recently launched with my products, resources, and more. From there, Lucky Sips: Non-Alcoholic Bliss was born, and I do not plan on looking back.

I strongly believe that while alcohol-use issues are spread amongst various ages, the demographic of young women aged 18-25, has often been overlooked in this arena, as they may not fit the stereotypical image of someone dealing with alcohol issues. I'm passionate about empowering these young women and showing them that they don't have to be ensnared in a cycle of regrets and hangovers. While this is my target demographic for certain events, I am also planning on putting on events that are co-ed, family friendly, and active-duty/veteran focused.
Addressing the market need, there is a noticeable shortage of suppliers and alcohol-free events, particularly in the midst of a prevalent drinking culture such as Oahu. In addition, there is currently only one store in all of the islands of Hawaii that focuses on non-alcoholic beverages (whom is AWESOME and I collaborate with often). This funding would greatly expedite my advancement in meeting this need, given that I am currently depending solely on my personal savings, which are starting to dwindle in terms of business funds. My set of products that I source from brands like Kin Euphorics, Parch, Leilo, and more achieve this goal of normalizing being alcohol-free by simply offering a replacement for whichever drink they were used to holding in their hand. In addition, it solves the need for sober events in my community which are almost zero. Lastly, I also plan to extend my services to the corporate event world, where alcohol and networking seem to be inseparable.

My largest costs at the moment are event costs that I am paying completely out of pocket. These events have already empowered participants to drink less, make connections clear-headed, and have the desire to attend more events sober. These funds would provide the necessary amount to jumpstart upcoming event costs, so that I can focus on marketing strategies, inventory acquisition, vetting products, and event details.

Lucky Sips has already successfully completed 2 upcoming events for the 2023 year. In October, I collaborated with a permanent local jewelry business, also offering a yoga session with a local studio followed by delightful non-alcoholic drink tastings. In November 2023, we hosted a non-alcoholic paint and sip gathering for ladies-only, providing them with an opportunity to come together and connect without the influence of alcohol. On December 21st, I have planned our upcoming Zero-Proofer Mixer at a prominent cocktail lounge where they also happen to serve delicious non-alcohol cocktails.

Speaking of marketing, this funding would be instrumental in developing a more improved and comprehensive marketing strategy, including eco-friendly and sustainable marketing materials, to create brand awareness and attract customers.
In regards to specific tools I would potentially purchase, I plan to invest in essential tools like a thermal printer and label printer to streamline shipping and inventory management processes, ensuring efficient operations from my home business.
I also anticipate the need for legal and accounting services to navigate regulatory requirements and ensure sound financial management. These funds could cover the potential consultation fees for these financial and legal experts to make sure I’m on the right path.
Ensuring the protection of my business and its assets is paramount as I would love to avoid a sticky situation. These funds would be allocated to cover insurance premiums and legal costs associated with the business. As my business grows, I foresee the need for additional workspace, storage space, and retail space. Grant funding would support this hopeful expansion and increased sober events!

Lastly, the team is just me for now! While I have awesome local businesses to collaborate with, I have built my tiny business myself and I am beginning to be proud of what it is becoming.

The Campaign FAQs

  • Can't people just drink sparkling water or a soda? Who would even want a non-alcoholic beer, what's the point?

Non-alcoholic beer, wine, and spirits are valuable tools for individuals maintaining sobriety by offering a bridge between the desire for a familiar experience and the commitment to abstain from alcohol. These alternatives provide a taste and ritualistic aspect similar to traditional drinks, making social integration more seamless and reducing cravings. They enable individuals to participate in social situations without feeling left out, support mindful drinking, and serve as a transitional aid in the early stages of sobriety and throughout their journey. While sparkling water or soda can be positive alternatives, non-alcoholic beverages specifically crafted to mimic traditional drinks can play a crucial role in helping individuals feel normal and stick with their commitment to a sober lifestyle.

This seems to be the most asked question I get. If you have any other questions at all, I'm an open book!
