A PROJECT BY MOTHERS·SHIP
Mothers•ship was created to support mothers and female entrepreneurs in Mexico. By providing timely resources, tools and community they need to start build and sustain profitable long -lasting businesses that gives them the capacity to grow a stable personal economy.
Mothers•ship fue creado para apoyar a madres y mujeres emprendedoras en México. Al proporcionar recursos, herramientas y comunidad oportunos, necesitan comenzar a construir y mantener negocios rentables y duraderos que les brinden la capacidad de hacer crecer una economía personal estable.
COVID-19 in Mexico
Before the Novel Coronavirus hit, there were 61.1 million of the 128 million population (CONEVAL; INEGI) living below the poverty line in Mexico. This number has grown drastically because adequate support sytems have not been put in place for those who live just above the poverty line. Of the 20 million people registred with social security as having jobs at the beggining of 2020, by April 2020 12 million had registered as not being employed.
In June 2020 there are more than 20'000 dead, one of the lowest rates of testing in the world but also one of the highest rates of positive cases for those testes (56%) in the world. Mexico has not reached it's peak and the numbers continue to grow.

Antes del golpe del Nuevo Coronavirus, había 61.1 millones de la población de 128 millones (CONEVAL; INEGI) viviendo por debajo del umbral de pobreza en México. Este número ha crecido drásticamente porque no se han establecido sistemas de apoyo adecuados para quienes viven justo por encima de la línea de pobreza. De los 20 millones de personas que se registraron en la seguridad social como trabajadores al comienzo de 2020, en abril de 2020, 12 millones se habían registrado como no empleados.
SO FAR IN MEXICO 800,000 MICRO & SMALL BUSINESSES HAVE CLOSED INDEFINITELY DUE TO COVID-19
At Motherhip we foresaw what was going to happen to a lot of the micro and small businesses owned by women. So we started a project called Sustento Mexico foodbank that gives 20 days care packages to mothers and women in our community because they need help so they don't fall under the poverty line.
Many women in our community lived on a day-to-day economy - ‘I work today, I eat tomorrow’, which means that the lockdowns and restrictions put in place due to Covid-19 put many of them in very difficult financial situations. A lot of women were still risking their lives to go out and work! 72% of Mexicans are part of the informal workforce, which means they have no guaranteed salaries, or they have small informal businesses running out of their homes.

En Motherhip preveíamos lo que sucedería a muchas micro y pequeñas empresas que eran propiedad de mujeres. Entonces, comenzamos un proyecto llamado Banco de alimentos Sustento México que brinda paquetes de alimentos y suministros que duran 20 días a madres y mujeres en nuestra comunidad porque necesitan ayuda para no caer bajo la línea de pobreza.
Muchas mujeres en nuestra comunidad vivían en una economía de dia a dia: "Trabajo hoy, como mañana", lo que significa que los bloqueos y restricciones establecidos debido a Covid-19 pusieron a muchas de ellas en situaciones financieras muy difíciles. ¡Muchas mujeres todavía arriesgaban sus vidas para salir y trabajar! Y el 72% de los mexicanos son parte de la fuerza laboral informal, lo que significa que no tienen salarios garantizados o tienen pequeñas empresas informales que se están operando desde sus hogares.
OUR RESPONSE
Sustento Foodbank will be distributing carepackages of food and household supplies to women and thier families. We also offer tools, resoruces, community and emotional support.
IN TIMES LIKE THESE, FOODBANKS PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN DELAYING THE DECLINE INTO POVERTY.

OUR METHOD / NUESTRO METODO
Because:
- The larger majority of people in Mexico continue to suffer financially so it's not a sustainable or fair option in our estimation, to ask them to give of the very little they have.
- Prices of basic food staples have risen so this is a cost effective option.
- It's a safer way to handle & distribute packages during this time.

A1. We have approached local large companies for help, bureacracy and alternate interests mean that although we've had many yeses, not many have committed, it's commonplace here.
A2. As mentioned 72% of people in this cpountry live in a day-to-day economy so lack of work and commerce has tightened everyones wallet, we don't think it fair to ask people who don't have to buy products that are currently far more expensive than normal to donate to others.
