Empowering Water Women to Dive Into Blue!

Project Description
Hi! I’m Anna! I’m a full-time water woman, third generation dive professional, professional mermaid, and spearfishing guide in the Florida Keys. I founded my company, Deep Blue Freediving, with the mission of creating a community of safety-minded and empowered divers. I started diving when I was eight years old and have spent more than twenty years in and around the dive and aquatics industry. Unfortunately, in those 20 years, not much has changed for female divers. Diving as a whole is still very much a boys club, and this is especially true when it comes to freediving and spearfishing segments. I’m the only female freediving instructor in the Florida Keys, and in the just over 90 freediving certifications I granted in 2022, only 5 were women.
In the few years I’ve been in business in the Keys, I’ve found a major hole in the market…women-friendly courses and charters. Most charters and dive operations here are captained by men, courses are taught by men, or at the very least, women find themselves on a boat under the prying gaze of 15-20 other people (mostly men) while they pull their wetsuit on over their favorite swimsuit. I believe this is a major road-block for women who are interested in the sport.
In this next phase of Deep Blue Freediving, I seek to create an empowering and welcoming private charter operation. I am just a few weeks away from gaining my US Coast Guard Captain’s License, and have a crew of experienced Water Women and captains waiting on deck.
With your support, I will be able to secure a vessel of my own for charters and courses. A fully-funded campaign of $60,000 would allow me to purchase a vessel, proper insurance for that vessel, and the necessary safety equipment I would need to have onboard and hit the water.
While I will not be marketing solely to women, it will remain a major priority for Deep Blue Freediving to ensure that I provide a space where women divers feel comfortable, empowered, and have the opportunity to push their limits without first being told where those limits lie.

- What is freediving?
- Freediving is the pratice of diving on a breathhold. Historically, most freedivers in coastal communities have actually been women! But, within the modern-day industry, women make up only a small percentage. We're here to help change that!
- Where is Deep Blue Freediving Located?
- We are located in the beautiful Upper Florida Keys, specifically Key Largo.
- What vessel is planning to be purchasd?
- After thorough research and multiple sea trials, I believe a dual console Glacier Bay 2640 would be ideal and provide the most diverse charter options.
- What safety equipment is needed?
In addtion to a VHF radio and Emergency Positioning Beacon, I will need to have a First Aid Kit, Oxygen Kit, and Automated External Defibrulator onboard. This will ensure that we are fully prepared should emergencies occur onboard or in the water.
