Project Description
- What is the mission of your company or project?
We desire to eradicate poverty and connect communities. Our cafe is not only serving as a workforce development program, but as a place where people of all social classes, colors, and experiences can feel comfortable connecting.
- Describe the problem you are solving.
In 2020, there were 37.2 million people in poverty. The traditional pathway from poverty in workforce development programs is salary-based and not ownership-based. This leads the majority of poor people to be trained as workers and not bosses.
- What is your company/product about and how does it solve the problem?
Different Shades and Co. is a workforce development program that partners with homeless shelters to vet potential employees. During their time of employment, they will be housed at lower than market value while receiving therapy, financial counseling, life coaching, etc. As employees, they will be trained as baristas, managers, and then franchise owners. This will permit them to open their own Different Shades and Co. - transitioning them from homelessness to business owners all through the means of a coffee shop.
- What is the market size/opportunity?
Luckily for us, the coffee industry isn’t going anywhere! Neither are workforce development programs, until poverty is eradicated. According to Ibis World, the industry hit 45.7 billion last year and is projected to grow at a steady rate of 2.3% until 2026.
- Why are you seeking funding and how will you spend the funding?
We are seeking funding to complete phase one. That includes a down payment on the mortgage and paying for the attorney as well as an architect. Once we fund those 3 areas, we can move on to phase two which is the acquisition of the building and construction. We qualified for a loan on this phase, so we really just need to raise this 55k to make the project happen!
