Cultured Customs: Culture Inspired Clothing

Cultured Customs was founded by Jala' Edwards while she attended college at Frostburg University. Jala' was on track to graduate in the Spring of 2020, when the pandemic hit and forced schools to close and send students home. Jala' started out making dance apparel using a Cricut Joy that she received for Christmas. While searching for dance designs that appealed to the black dancer, she found that not many companies make and sell cultural apparel, so she decided to expand her business to clothing for and inspired by black culture. Jala' chose colors and designs that display uplifting imagery. 

The mission of Cultured Customs is to provide freedom of expression through style by providing clothing and accessories that represent black culture. 

Since opening the business in 2020, we have been self-funded and operating out of a 10 x 10 foot guest bedroom in Jala's home. Although Jala is the business owner, her mother Crystal is always lending a helping hand with shipping and  selling at pop-up shops and flea markets. 

Our market is worldwide (mostly via web orders). We would very much like to find a commercial location in Maryland to grow the business. A physical location would be the first of its kind in the state. 

We are raising money to open a physical location in 2023. Apparel business can be capital intensive due to the amount of clothing needed to fulfill multiple orders and the space needed to operate the equipment needed for pressing and screen printing.
