What is the mission of your company or project?

BrownGirl SPACE advocates for BrownGirls seeking a safe space to encourage healing by promoting and providing accurate information regarding mental health awareness. In an effort to empower BrownGirls to understand their own mental health diagnosis, personal mental health needs and experiences, while feeling confident in practicing self-care without feeling selfish, insecure or alone. 

Describe the problem you are solving.

BrownGirl SPACE aims to dismantle mental health stigma and narratives that Black women must be strong all the time. BGS is dedicated to decreasing the number women that exhibit shame and discomfort talking about mental health.  BGS works to do away with the notion that self care is only a luxury and must be earned. 

What is the market size/opportunity?

The market size is limitless as mental health advocacy is for all people as well as all people have mental health. However, BrownGirl SPACE seeks to reach BrownGirls  who want to build their self esteems and gain confidence to openly talk about mental health and practice self care. 

What is your company/product about and how does it solve the problem? 

BrownGirl SPACE works to normalize discussion about mental health through psychoeducation, highlighting community resources and providing assistance to accessing mental health resources. BGS has hosted a number of community events to discuss issues such as surviving sexual abuse/assault and how to create SMART goals. A host of community collaborations and giveaways such as back to school back drives and clothing giveaways to domestic violence safe havens. 

Why are you seeking funding and how will you spend the funding?

BrownGirl SPACE is seeking funding for community programs, the mental health assistance fund and to pay contributors to our work.

1. BrownGirl SPACE was created to be in person with women in real time to have safe and supportive community groups to provide psychoeducation on various mental health topics. Funding is needed to back these efforts in order to rent venues/spaces and materials for programing. Funding will allow opportunities to host more community giveaways and events. 
2. The BrownGirl SPACE Mental Health Assistance fund was created and aims to assist black women who are facing financial hardship pay for 6-8 therapy sessions. Therapy is an investment that many women are unable to cover the expenses to begin or remain in treatment.  Funding would help to keep funds available.
3. In order to have support with operations BrownGirl SPACE has hired writers and other support team members to help with day-to-day operations. These people need to be compensated for their time and efforts towards their contributions.
