Project Description
Kindred Company will provide a quality coworking experience for parents, with playspaces and staffed childcare for children ten and under.
While the popularity of remote jobs is on the rise, much more so is the cost of childcare. What do working/work-from-home parents do when school is out, or when their child is not yet school age? The struggle to balance working remotely while home with young children contributes to feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety from feeling overwhelmed. The latest data shows over 14% of the workforce in Wayne County, Michigan works from home at least part time. And while our county boasts over 125 thousand families with children under six years old, there are no dedicated coworking spaces that welcome infants and children. Instead, parents without access to reliable childcare bring their laptops to noisy and chaotic indoor playgrounds, or try to keep young children occupied in coffee shops or libraries. The alternative is to be isolated at home, which can present a number of other challenges for mental health and productivity.
Kindred Company will be the region's only family focused coworking space, passionate about providing social and professional support to our already overtaxed working parents. Parents who were previously confined to the home office will be able to work in the company of others, socializing, networking, and collaborating. Children will be able to engage and make friends in nearby open play areas, or in the care of our licensed onsite childcare staff. Our community will support freelancers and small business owners through marketing opportunities and popups. Parents will have access to personal and professional development workshops. Fun family events will be hosted every month.
I am a parent who is all too familiar with the struggle of working remotely from home with little access to affordable childcare. I have heard from countless individuals in my area who also desperately crave this family focused coworking community. Like so many families, I have the passion, determination, and experience to bring Kindred Company to life -- just not the capital. I am raising the funds through the enthusiasm, generosity, and support of individuals who maybe have experienced a similar struggle, or simply believe in the necessity of more family friendly work spaces. At this time, I am seeking funds for basic startup and operational costs - rent and utilities, reliable telecom service, furnishing, and the hiring of our initial childcare staff.
Kindred Company is solely owned and operated by me, Anna Nieves-Herrera -- a mom who is drafting this pitch from her couch, as her three-year-old dumps his crackers on the floor. Help me get out of this house!! I have a heart for creating a welcoming and supportive space for weary parents like myself. This is not an original idea. I first joined a family coworking space during my time living in Tacoma, Washington. That incredible community altered my life for the better and brought me to the team as they opened a new location in 2020. I have over four years' experience working in a family focused coworking space from the ground up. I am ready to introduce that incredible type of community and support to my new home here in Michigan.

Your money contributes to the following

Is my contribution refundable?
All contributions are nonrefundable.
How can I redeem my prepaid membership or childcare hours?
Prepaid services will be tracked onsite. Once we are open for business, members will receive a welcome email with more information.
I don't live in or near Plymouth. Can I still contribute?
Absolutely! We graciously welcome donations from anywhere in the entire galaxy. Non-local donors, your visit will be comped if you're ever in town.
Non-local Business owners can also become sponsors.

I don't need this service, but I know someone who does. Can I purchase as a gift?
