Project Description
Body Art Noire is dedicated to making a positive impact on Inglewood and its residents by cultivating a culturally sensitive community space for healing, health and wellness through yoga and meditation. We offer heated Vinyasa Basics, Vinyasa Flow, Restorative Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Rocket Yoga and Meditation classes. We are an inclusive yoga community that welcomes yogis from all backgrounds. We have found the perfect studio location in the heart of downtown Inglewood and we need your help raising funds for renovations. With your generous donations we will create a high quality, safe, visually appealing community studio with modern technology to serve the unique needs of local residents.
As of 2017, Inglewood has a population of 111,000 residents - 51.4% Hispanic or Latino, 40.9% Black or African American alone and 3.72% White alone. While many communities in the Los Angeles area have access to a yoga studio (in some areas multiple options) there isn't a single yoga studio in Inglewood. The typical yoga studio simply does not reflect what this unique community looks like or experiences.
- Yoga studios are typically highly homogeneous communities. Black & Brown students are often "the only" in classes.
- Cost of monthly memberships can start at $150 making participation a luxury activity.
- Black and Brown communities typically experience more health issues due to socio-economic circumstances - lack of health insurance, wage gap disparities and racial bias when receiving/seeking healthcare.
The time is NOW because the community is evolving as large organizations and infrastructure are being prioritized. It is Body Art Noire's desire to share health and wellness through the modalities of yoga and meditation with residents. Inglewood deserves to have wellness from WITHIN the community.
