Project Description
We started as a board game event company, doing pop-up gaming events, but we always had the goal to eventually turn our company into a board game cafe. The pandemic shut us down and delayed our dreams.
Our goal is to open an open an inclusive environment for tabletop board gaming in the Chicagoland suburbs. There aren't a lot of activities for families and young adults to enjoy in our area. We would like to bring people together through board games.
We will offer premium beverages and snacks and a game library of over 150 games available to sit and play, or to rent to enjoy in the comfort and safety of your own home.
We are seeking funding to help with the remodeling costs and initial operations costs.
Critical Grind is owned by my husband and I. I recently quit my job to put all my focus and energy into making Critical Grind a success. My husband works full time from home and has been taking on more responsibilities around the house to allow me more time to work on Critical Grind.

Q: Did you apply for a loan at a bank?
A: We did. Because we have been in business since 2018 we don't qualify for new small business loans. Since we were shut down for 2 years due to the pandemic, we have no revenue to qualify for existing business loans.
Q: What about the pandemic relief loans?
A: We applied but since we are such a small company we only qualified for a small amount, which was enough to keep our website active.
Q: Do you have any savings?
A: We have been using our savings, and a bit of money my dad left me after he passed away. We have purchased most of the equipment needed for the cafe, and there is a bit left for the rest of the equipment.
