Empowering Senior Women of Color
Project Description
Help us change the narrative for senior women of color.
Ignite This Ish has partnered with The Gallivanting Grandma™ to encourage senior women of color to learn how to swim.
Did you know?
- Black Americans face a 50% higher drowning rate.
- Seniors aged 65+ have the second highest drowning rate between age groups.
- Children who's parents don't know how to swim have a 19% chance of learning how to swim.
If the MATRIARCH of the family doesn't know how to swim, she is less likely to encourage her children and grandchildren to learn how to swim.
You can help us power the voyage and change the narrative.
Your generous donation of $52,000 will:
- Provide a safe and comforting space for senior Black women to learn how to swim over 10 days.
- Hire certified instructors who are STRONGLY aligned with our cause and highly specialized in adaptive and trauma-informed swimming.
- Change the narrative and provide healing for senior Black women and their lineages.
Remember: Swimming is a VITAL life-saving skill everyone should know, regardless of age.
About The Gallivanting Grandma™
Diamond Crystal, founder of The Gallivanting Grandma™, creates transformative experiences for senior Black women to empower them as they embark on a new life stage.
Our Role
Ignite This Ish is an interdisciplinary organization that uses UX as a vehicle to provide web support and research in support of this retreat and our cause to understand swim disparity among marginalized communities.
We aim to determine the following:
- What are the physical, psychological, cultural, and historical barriers contributing to today's swim disparity?
- What are the interconnected commonalities between the various groups affected by swim disparity?
