We are the founders of Immigrants Beyond Immigration!
I'm Joa, a Luso-American Latina immigrant who understands first-hand the challenges of adapting to life in a foreign land and being a first-gen in many areas. Having lived in the US for over 17 years and helping friends and family acculturate to the country, I've recognized the need for comprehensive support for immigrants.
For over ten years, I've worked with healthcare, education, public health, and community organizations to access the Latinx market, multiculturalism, health/social disparities, HIV Prevention, Diversity & Inclusion, and intercultural communication.
And
I'm Ruben; I was born and raised in Venezuela. I come from a multicultural background, with a Mexican father and a Venezuelan mother. Diverse experiences across different countries have shaped my journey before settling in the US. My passion lies in promoting social inclusion, equity, and positive change, particularly within immigrant communities.
Throughout my fifteen-plus professional journey as a journalist, author, and professor, I have collaborated with media organizations, academia, government agencies, NGOs, civil organizations, and non-profit entities. Immigrating to new countries has defined my career and allowed me to engage closely with diverse communities and individuals.

Immigrants Beyond Immigration is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting immigrants in the United States regardless of how long they’ve been here.
Our mission is to create awareness, provide education, and build capacity for immigrants so that they can navigate complex systems and become active participants in conversations and solutions that address disparities within their communities.
At Immigrants Beyond Immigration, we understand the challenges faced by Spanish-speaking Latinos in the United States. Whether they've recently arrived or have been here for years, navigating a new culture can be overwhelming.
The Problem: Cultural Barriers Hinder Complete Immigrant Integration
Acculturation is the process by which individuals or groups adopt and integrate into a new or dominant culture's cultural practices, values, and behaviors. It involves learning and adapting to the norms, language, customs, and social expectations of the host country.
The duration of acculturation varies depending on factors such as the individual's background, prior exposure to the new culture, language proficiency, and the extent of support available. Still, it can take decades and, in many cases, generations.
Acculturation to the US can be challenging for immigrants who lack knowledge of the American systems, laws, and social dynamics. This lack of understanding can hinder their ability to navigate educational, employment, healthcare, and legal systems, limiting their opportunities for success and hindering their overall integration and well-being.
