In or Out Feature Film Support

IN or OUT offers a first-person view of the pressure to join gang violence from the perspective of young black men and women with the goal of exposing the deep systemic challenges of historical oppression. This film shows the aspect of why young men join gangs, especially black men, and the generational cycle it has amongst the people that choose to go down that route. It also highlights the expanding role of social media and the importance of keeping up an online image as well as the lengths young people will go through to feel accepted and included in an increasingly divided world.

Purpose of In or Out

My motivations are based on my direct observations regarding the suffering caused by gang violence and the perpetuation of gang culture. I have known too many young people who have chosen lives of crime because gang life is glamourized in the music they listen to and the media they consume. This project is meant to peel back the curtain behind the ugly reality of what too many young people consider to be a glamorous lifestyle. This film will also bring awareness to gun violence and the increasing war on gang activity in the black community. 

It goes without saying how important media are and can be when it comes to the influence of our culture. It also goes without saying that, though significant, there are still too many stones left unturned and important topics left unaddressed.

That's where the heart of In or Out lie.  In or Out's story is deeply personal from my experiences as an educator and is necessary for our culture. Aside from showcasing black men in extremely vulnerable, yet delicate lights, In or Out has the power to uplift, empower, and provided a platform to and for other women storytellers.
