Project Description
Black Girls Sew - Transforming Lives, Stitch by Stitch
Founded in 2013, Black Girls Sew is a 501C3 nonprofit organization headquartered in the vibrant neighborhood of Bedstuy, Brooklyn, New York. The organization is on a mission to shape a more fashionable future while focusing on the invaluable teaching of fundamental life skills through the art of design.
In response to the absence of Home Economics and Lifeskills programs in many NYC schools, Black Girls Sew has emerged as a catalyst for change. The organization seeks to fill this educational void and restore these essential skills by launching the SEW BK-NYC initiative. The ambitious goal is to raise $100,000 in 2024 to create a mobile sewing classroom that will bring these vital life skills directly to the community.
The heart of Black Girls Sew lies in its commitment to empowerment through education. The organization will continue to offer monthly sustainable sewing classes for adults, ensuring that individuals of all ages have access to the transformative experience of learning and creating. The Sew Green Fashion Camp, tailored for the youth, will also persist, fostering creativity and sustainable practices.
To achieve these goals and expand their impact, Black Girls Sew is actively seeking funding for specific needs:
Transit-Style Van ($50,000): A mobile sewing classroom requires reliable transportation. The van will serve as a hub of creativity, reaching various neighborhoods and communities with sewing education.
Classroom Conversion ($25,000): Transforming the interior of the van into a functional and inspiring classroom space is crucial for an effective and engaging learning environment.
Sewing Equipment ($10,000): Equipping the mobile classroom with the necessary sewing tools and machines is vital to facilitating hands-on learning experiences.
Licenses, Insurance & Parking ($15,000): To ensure the seamless operation of the mobile classroom, funds are needed for licenses, insurance, and parking fees.
By securing these resources, Black Girls Sew aims to break down barriers to education, making sewing and life skills accessible to all. The organization believes that through creativity and resourcefulness, individuals can not only fashion their own futures but also contribute to the positive transformation of their communities. Black Girls Sew is stitching a narrative of empowerment, resilience, and creativity, one thread at a time.
