We wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t dire.

My name is Jillian Barkley and I'm the owner of Soft Spirits, the city's first nonalcoholic bottle shop proudly serving Los Angeles since 2021.

It’s difficult to put into words just how catastrophic the situation is for small businesses in Los Angeles right now. Many have experienced complete devastation and we know how lucky we are to still be standing. While we don’t wish to step in front of those who have lost everything, we cannot overlook the impact on businesses experiencing the rippling effects, businesses like ours, struggling to keep their doors open and employees paid.

We've hesitated to self-promote or ask for assistance out of respect for the very urgent need of fire victims. The citizens of Los Angeles have rightfully directed their financial resources to those affected, but in the meantime there are countless local businesses all over the city who are at risk of closing their doors for good. Sales have dropped to record lows, and those of us outside the fire zones won’t receive disaster aid or insurance reimbursements. For many this isn’t just a setback; it’s the breaking point after years of economic challenges, from the pandemic to the writers/actors strikes and now the devastating impact of the wildfires. We’re not only fighting for our livelihood —we’re fighting to preserve the culture and vibrancy of our city that we love so much.

One bad month of sales can end a small business, and that’s the reality our shop is facing. Our most valuable fallback asset is the community we’ve built over the last 4 years, who we do our best to serve every single day. Now we must call on our community to keep Soft Spirits operational through this crisis. By contributing to our fundraiser you’ll help us keep our shelves stocked, our bills paid, and our debts manageable. We know you’re stretched thin with so many in need, but the unfortunate truth is we can’t stay afloat without you. This isn't a money grab or an opportunity to exploit tragedy. We're asking only for the amount of revenue lost in January (compared to January of last year) which we need to save our business.
