While Western medicine has positives, modern healthcare often falls short when addressing the needs of our community. In particular, the interconnectedness of our physical health/wellness and our mental wellbeing is often neglected or minimized. In addition, many wellness spaces cater to affluent, white women leaving out a large segment of the population who are in need of services, community, and culturally competent education. Lastly, true health and wellness cannot exist without community.
WHO ARE WE?
Be Well, Sis was created out of my own need for inviting wellness spaces that spoke to my experiences as a Black woman in America. In addition to the trauma that are a result of racism, classism, colorism, and the like, Black women also endure challenges that are part of the universal human experience , i.e. loss, disappointment, illness, and self-doubt. In my search for resources and community that addressed these needs, I was met with a shallow, commodified industry peddled by people with toxic ideals and little to no expertise.
