Sing and Share with Courage Scholarship Program

Our Mission:

Bailey Barnes Voice Studio is a place where pre professional and emerging professional singers of all ages come to learn how to be captivating performers and savvy music business people so they can pursue the music career they desire without self doubt and overwhelm getting in their way.

The Problem:

The Covid 19 pandemic has widened the gap between the haves and the have nots. People who were struggling financially pre-pandemic - be it small business owners, independent artists, recent college graduates, or single parents - are finding it harder than ever to recover financially as we continue to feel the effects of the virus and the recession it caused. Too often, it is the aspiring singers with independent wealth who have access to opportunities to grow their career simply because they have the resources, not because they are more gifted or deserving. Many people in my community that are working to dedicate their lives to their singing career are struggling to find the funds they need to invest in their professional development by hiring voice teachers and music business mentors. This includes young artists as well as parents who have kids that are clearly destined for a career in the arts are struggling to pay the bills, let alone invest in their child's artistic future.

Who will be supported?

This scholarship money will aid approximately 15-20 students in Bailey Barnes' voice studio from September 2021 to September 2022.

How can we solve the problem? 

This year I am launching the Sing and Share with Courage Scholarship Fund, so that marginalized students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds can continue down their path to becoming professional musicians and performers. This scholarship fund will lift the financial burden of artistic professional development to help professional track singers of all ages learn how to be skilled singers who know how to book gigs and create a profitable singing career for themselves.

Why?

I am seeking funding because I know first hand how difficult it can be for artists and parents to be able to make the investments in vocal training and music business education that are essential to a successful performing career. I want to continue to support singers and musicians, and help them to gain the vocal skill, confidence and discipline required to make their singing dreams a reality as I have over my decade long career.

Mia Gurule is my newly hired marketing manager. She created graphics, shot, and edited the video.

Malik Mays is a songwriter, producer, and musician based in Oakland, CA. Their work explores subject and object, agency, powerlessness and time through the lens of Black queer identity. They edited and enhanced the audio of the video, as well as wrote the music for it.
